With an estimated population of 317 students (2017), Robert Ogilvie Elementary School has a diverse student background; approximately 16% of enrolled students have Aboriginal ancestry. The school staff is comprised of 13 divisions, and student support includes two behavioral support workers, an Aboriginal student support worker, guided reading, SMART reading, counseling, a meals program (lunches and breakfasts, funded by Community Links), recycling program, reading recovery, learning assistance, and more.

Robert Ogilvie Elementary is considered an “inner city” school and therefore receives funding through Community Links for meals programs and aide time.

Sports programs and extracurricular activities at Robert Ogilvie Elementary include volleyball, soccer, basketball, badminton, softball, track and field, science fairs, and student leadership. The school’s composting program received an Honourable Mention by ScienceWorld BC’s BC Green Games in 2012. This composting program is a group of around 15 students called Earth Guardians who not only recycle, but upcycle and other environmental steps in the school.

The school is proud of their behavioral support programs, including the Leadership Club which plans and organizes special activities for students of the school. All programs are conducted in the Student Support Centre, as well as in classrooms, the playground, and social groups. School staff participates in a wide range of activities and committees as well, including Student Support, Learning Resources, Professional Development, Social Responsibility, Aboriginal Support and Safety, and Healthy Schools.

There is also an active Parent Advisory Council (or PAC) and School Planning Committee (SPC) at Robert Ogilvie Elementary, which assists in day-to-day school operations, budgets, meetings, and also planning and organizing sports and school activities.

The School Improvement Plan (supported by the Parent Advisory Council, School Planning Committee, and the Social Responsibility Committee) oversees improvements to the school like new flower beds, new paint and logo for the front of the school building, and much more.

Robert Ogilvie Elementary School is part of School District #60 Peace River North, which has its home office in the city of Fort St. John although it serves all surrounding areas, including Prespatou, Taylor, Buick, Wonowon, Baldonnel, Hudson’s Hope, and Charlie Lake. School District #60 is British Columbia’s first district to initiate a district-wide laptop computer program, where all students in grades 6-7 receive a laptop computer to use either at home or at school.
