Tucked on 89th Avenue in the vibrant city of Fort St. John, Duncan Cran Elementary School currently enrolls around 300 students enrolled in grades K-6, with approximately 30% of students having a First Nations heritage. The school was named after a surveyor of the same name who lived in Fort St. John (b. 1892-d.1978), surveying much of the land in the city including Cache Creek, Boundary Lake, and the Halfway River areas. Cran was also very active in the community following his retirement in 1963.

Duncan Cran Elementary employs a staff of 16 teachers, ten support workers, a principal and vice-principal, as well as a part-time librarian and an early reading intervention teacher. The school also receives itinerate resources for a range of services, such as counseling, and teachers for students with hearing and vision impairments and learning difficulties, courtesy of the school district.

There are several sports programs and extracurricular activities available for students, including volleyball and basketball, and after-school activities like arts and crafts, and native dance classes. The volleyball team at Duncan Cran won 1st place at the district volleyball tournament in 2013. Other school programs include StrongStart, which is a free early-learning program for kids aged 0-5 (must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian) where early learning educators oversee fun classes for young kids at different schools in the province. StrongStart teachers lead activities such as arts and crafts, music, stories, dramatic play, construction games, and much more, in order to grow and develop a child’s social, physical, intellectual, and emotional skills.

Duncan Cran Elementary participated in an energy challenge—the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge—hosted by Shell and Canadian Geographic, receiving the Top School prize in 2013 for the second year in a row. The students who participated in the challenge incorporated such activities as recycling, powering down electronics during school hours, and trying to adopt a “litter-less” lunch program to reduce the amount of school waste that accumulates.

This elementary school is part of School District #60 Peace River North with its home location in Fort St. John; it serves the city as well as surrounding areas like Charlie Lake, Taylor, Buick, Baldonnel, Wonowon, Prespatou, and Hudson’s Hope. School District #60 has the distinction of being British Columbia’s first district to establish a district-wide laptop computer program. Because of this initiative, all students in grades 6-7 in the school district’s service area receive a laptop to use at home or at school.
