The Key Learning Centre is located in the historic city of Fort St. John, nestled in the picturesque Peace River Valley. The centre currently houses three programs including a Junior Alternate program. Currently, the school staff is comprised of seven teachers, nine support workers, a principal and vice-principal, and one administrator.

The centre’s philosophy is a “commitment to learning anywhere, anytime, any pace”, and the staff is committed to ensuring each student’s wellbeing and education. The Key Learning Centre practices a distributed learning system, utilizing online and paper-based courses that set the school apart from others in the area. An active Parent Advisory Council (or PAC) and parent community assists the school in daily operations, sports and extracurricular activities, and more.

This current school year (2017/2018), the centre is focusing on developing students’ achievements through the option of more choices, with specific attention on increasing skills and knowledge in writing, reading, and math/numeracy abilities.

The Key Learning Centre serves the school districts of North Peace, South Peace, Stikine, Fort Nelson, and the whole Yukon Territory. School District #60 Peace River North (just one of the school districts that the centre services) has its home office location in Fort St. John, and is British Columbia’s first district to initiate a laptop computer program. This program is district-wide and allows all students in grades 6-7 to receive a laptop computer for use both at home and at school.

School District #59 South Peace is located in Dawson Creek, serving surrounding areas like Pouce Coupe, Chetwynd, Groundbirch, Tumbler Ridge, Moberly Lake, Farmington, Tower Lake, Rolla, and Tomslake.

School District #81 Fort Nelson services the northeastern area of British Columbia, located in the city of Fort Nelson.
School District #87 Stikine services areas like Dease Lake, Lower Post, Atlin, and Telegraph Creek in the northwest portion of British Columbia.

British Columbia’s new, redesigned curriculum system (supported and instituted by the Ministry of Education) focuses on core competencies, learner-centred learning, developing numeracy and literacy, and also utilizing competency-driven and concept-based approaches to students’ education.
