Housed in the Pomeroy Sports Centre (PSC) in the historic city of Fort St. John, the Energetic Learning Campus is a branch of North Peace Secondary School and was opened in 2011 by the Ministry of Education.

Students of the Energetic Learning Campus have access to community members and facilities at the Pomeroy Sports Centre, including the centre’s two NHL-sized ice rink, a 340-metre walking/running track, and an Olympic-sized track speed skating oval. The ECL does not have traditional classrooms, instead using movable desks and chairs, and the learning spaces are flexible as well; students can decide where they study or learn, utilizing any area of the campus they choose.

The ECL’s learning program is also non-traditional; along with the core curriculum and courses like a normal school system; the Energetic Learning Campus was designed for students to follow a primarily project-based curriculum which is intended to further enhance the school district’s “dual-credit and work experience programs”. Students of the Energetic Learning Campus also have the opportunity to train and learn in fields including plant maintenance, ice-making, and other skill-training areas. All sporting facilities inside the Pomeroy Sports Centre are also available for students of ECL to utilize for projects as well as daily physical fitness requirements.

The philosophy at the Energetic Learning Campus is “Personalization”, “Adult World Connection”, “Common Intellectual Mission”, and “Teacher as Designer”. The “Personalization” theme is accomplished through each student of ECL having a staff advisor who monitors the student’s academic and personal development, as well as being a liaison for the student’s family. Those students with special needs (such as learning disabilities or hearing/vision problems) receive additional individual support from staff advisors. “Adult World Connection” philosophy ensures that students of ECL receive learning outside of school walls, including connecting students to local experts in certain fields and industries; students may shadow an expert throughout a work day, have lunches with experts, or participate in community service or group projects. The “Common Intellectual Mission” philosophy is in effect at ECL through a rigorous curriculum program, and all students have performance-based assessments, are required to set goals through their staff advisors, and demonstrate their learning and their progress towards graduation. “Teacher as Designer” at ECL simply means that teachers of the campus work together as a team to develop all programs and curriculums, have scheduled planning and learning time, ensure students have lessons in and outside of the ECL, and each students strives to have a heightened learning experience.

The Energetic Learning Campus is part of School District #60 Peace River North (and is a campus of North Peace Secondary School). SD60’s base location is in the city of Fort St. John, but it also serves surrounding areas like Buick, Taylor, Baldonnel, Charlie Lake, Hudson’s Hope, Wonowon, and Prespatou. This school district is the first in British Columbia to initiate a district-wide laptop computer program, where students in grades 6-7 receive a laptop computer for use either at home or at school.
