Situated in the heart of downtown Fort St. John, Ecole Central Elementary School of the Arts is a cutting-edge dual-track school with a current enrollment of around 359 students, with approximately 230 students in the French Immersion program and around 120 in the English program. The school also has an early French Immersion program that starts in Kindergarten or Grade 1, as well as a late program starting Grade 6, but is dependent on enrollment.

The staff at Ecole Central Elementary is currently composed of 17 teachers, 11 support staff, a principal and vice-principal, two librarians, and two reading recovery teachers. The school also receives additional services like counseling, and teachers for students with hearing and vision impairments, through itinerate professionals supported by the school’s district.

Athletic programs at Ecole Central Elementary include badminton, basketball, volleyball, cross-country running, cross-country skiing, bowling, and track and field.

Ecole Central Elementary is focusing on the development of reading, writing, and social responsibilities for students, and especially for those who are underachieving in these areas. The school is also extremely focused on the arts, which they firmly believe is essential to a meaningful, valuable education. The staff at Ecole Central Elementary also believes in taking a collaborative approach to teaching and dedicates time to increase the number of teachers in the arts field; the school currently has a large musical which encompasses over 50 students every year. There are three cycles of fine arts modules for intermediate students per week. An intermediate band program practices twice a week, and the school’s band teacher takes time to work with other teachers to provide music instruction to non-band members. Ecole Central Elementary also employs a fine arts specialist instructor who teaches visual arts to students.

Ecole Central Elementary is proud of their strong and supportive Parent Advisory Council (or PAC), who strive to advocate for all students as well assisting the staff on school projects, classroom activities, special events like dances and field trips, and daily operations of the school.

This fine arts school is part of School District #60 Peace River North, which serves Fort St. John as well as surrounding areas like Prespatou, Taylor, Buick, Hudson’s Hope, Baldonnel, and several other communities. The district is also the first district in British Columbia to launch a district-wide laptop computer program, enabling all students in grades 6-7 to receive a laptop to use either at home or at school.
